I first read this over twenty years ago and caught the excitement and the vision of independence achieved through Paris-mutual investing! Had some profitable seasons, but still needed a day job! Being a successful, independent bettor is one of the toughest paths to blaze. Unless you have terrific vision this Kindle book is very difficult to read the Daily Racing Form charts that Andy includes to explain his handicapping choices. I enjoy Andy Beyer's writing style and has been one of my favorite turf analysts so it was nice to read how he started out as a professional handicapper.

My advice - buy the hardcover. A great read- Andy Beyer has had more of an impact on handicapping and horse racing than any single person over the past 50 years. His book Picking Winners led me into the racing game at 18 and I was hooked. Love the stories in this book-interesting to read about racing during a time where the exact and the daily double were the only exotic bets.

If you love playing horses, you have to read everything Beyer writes. It's an interesting story and the application of mathematics to horse racing appealed to my intellect. I gave it four stars because the "year" was and all the individual calculations have been superseded by computers. Nevertheless, if you've ever speculated about making a living solely on betting the horses, Andrew Beyer will give you hope. Ponderous but entertaining if you enjoy placing a few bets at the track it's a good read.

The title explains what's going on. Though it's old , you might still gain some wisdom A good deal, considering it was free.

This is a great book for anyone who loves horse racing and betting.
